Wednesday April 2, 2003.
From Yakima I headed briefly southeast on Interstate Highway 82
and then turned southwest onto Highway 97 towards Goldendale. I refueled at Goldendale and then went west along Highway
14, following the Columbia River Gorge on the Washington side as far as The Dalles.
At The Dalles I crossed the river and backtracked along the Gorge
eastwards on the Oregon side. The road following the Gorge on the Oregon side is a freeway. Preferring smaller
roads, I turned off the freeway and took a minor and much more interesting route up through the hills until I met Highway
97 once more, and followed it south down the middle of Oregon, across high windswept rolling plains until I reached
the town of Bend, where I am now settled for the evening in "The Riverhouse" motel.
In contrast with yesterday's decidely alpine terrain, today was
a day of rolling hills, and horizon to horizon textured skies.
